On Friday 25th, it was alleged DP Ruto went to State House in the evening without any formal invitations from either the president or staff at the Head of State’s official residence. The DP decided to drive himself to State House after making several unsuccessful calls to house on the hill. It is not yet clear why he was making the calls.
According to credible sources, on arriving at State House, he requested to see the president. However, Statehouse Comptroller Kinuthia Mbugua told him Uhuru was busy, in a meeting and asked him to leave the vicinity, promising the president would return his calls and see him later. This did not amuse the DP who left State House minutes later.
It is alleged that is why he deliberately skipped Monday’s state event at the KICC. Those who had organised the protocol did not expect Ruto to miss the event since his chair was already reserved, next to President Uhuru Kenyatta’s.
Besides, it was already in the programme, that he was to arrive at KICC few minutes past 2pm and later welcome the Head of State to address the nation. President Uhuru’s handlers realized all was not well when a few minutes past 2pm, Ruto’s motorcade was nowhere near vicinity, forcing organizers of the event to delay the programme with the hope of DP’s arrival.
It was here that State House officials made a call to the DP a record seven times but he did not pick up his phone. Worried, the officials alerted President Uhuru Kenyatta who personally called but his calls were not also answered. It was after this that Ruto’s chair was removed from the front row since it was now apparent he was not coming.
When reached for their reaction, sources from Harambee Annex said the DP skipped KICC event since he did not want to be part of the sanitization of of Covid-19 theft having been sidelined by State House from March this year, after the pandemic broke in the country. Afya House and KEMSA are currently on the spotlight over theft of close to 43B shillings meant to help mitigate the virus and cushion Kenyan families.
